McCoy & Thomas Sports was established in Whangarei in 1954 (over 50 years ago). The business is still operating from its original premises, but is now three times larger!
In 1994, Carl Watkins and Phillip Smith purchased McCoy & Thomas Sports as well as the Hunting & Fishing New Zealand franchise for Northland. Carl says this was a business coup to add a specialist Hunting & Fishing New Zealand franchise to an already successful retail store. The franchise gave McCoys better buying power, exclusive products, national coverage and three colour catalogues per year which are sent to all of our registered customers.

Dargaville Hunting & Fishing New Zealand has specialist staff on hand for local knowledge on fishing or hunting in the local area.
Dargaville Hunting & Fishing New Zelaland was purchased in August 2006 by Jason Campbell who was at that stage working as a popular 2IC at the store.

Kaitaia locals and visitors now have their own Hunting & Fishing New Zealand store. And it's impressive, around 400sqm of well displayed essentials for all the needs of the far north outdoors enthusiast! Located on the main street, 147-161 Commerce Street, between Mitre 10 and Liqour Land, parking is generally easy - even with a boat.
Barry and Shona are Northland 'locals' although home for the pas 29 year has been nearer Dargaville where they were in horiculture - growing kumaras commercially. Purchasing the Kaitaia store is the realization of an ambition for the Judd's. "We have always had a love of the outdoors", says Shona. "Barry has always been a a keen hunter and fisherman all his life. His real passions are Duckshooting, deer stalking and saltwater fishing, but given the opportunity he will give most other sports a go."

Don grew up in rural Canada where he discovered his passion for the outdoors - it's said that no varmint was safe in those parts at that time! Don's mother was a kiwi so it was natural for Don to come to this country to check it out. To cut a long story short Don fell in love with New Zealand, particularly Northland where he even married one of the inhabitants - Joanne! These days first & foremost, Dons career is as a vet based in the Dargaville region. Dons spare time is spent out on the water - often in the Bay of Islands & 2006 has been a red letter year what with catching his first 20lb snapper & first striped marlin. "Not through a lack of effort up to this time either!" - reckons Don.
