Stores

Imagine a 1000sqm outdoors Super Store handy to central city arterials for access, its own free car park, a custom fit-out featuring jet-boats and other iconic Canterbury memorabilia, the South Islands biggest selection of hunting, fishing, camping and tramping equipment under one roof, prices and exclusives that are the result of belonging to a group with 31 store buying power, a team of dedicated and experienced staff, and 7 days a week shopping convenience. Well Cameron Moore had imagined it ever since he purchased the Hunting & Fishing New Zealand franchise for Canterbury (Ballinger's) back in 2008. Now he's done it!

Ballinger's became a Christchurch institution over 50 years ago when first established in Victoria Street. Opened in 1958, Ballinger's is Canterbury's longest established gun/outoors store. In 1993 Ballinger's joined Hunting & Fishing New Zealand, invested in a comprehensive fishing department, and relocated into Montreal Street. Now Cameron has expanded this great business into premises four times larger. To create a shopping experience unique to Christchurch Cameron first visited the USA twice to get the latest in shop fit-out ideas, hired some of the most experienced designers and builders in the industry, has utilised over 10,000 linear metres of macrocarpa, in fact to create a unique shopping experience, he has invested several hundred thousand dollars in this project. Cameron has friends who can be described as Canterbury identities, and he was pleased to use their help to achieve a store layout that would have a local flavour. Finally Cameron brought his experienced team from the old Montreal Street shop, and now he's ready to unveil the store that truly does justice to the awesome Canterbury outdoors resource and lifestyle.

Ashburton Hunting & Fishing New Zealand has opened its doors. This is a beautiful brand new 500 sqm store which took over 3 months to fit-out. Situated behind the orange VTNZ testing station at 393 West Street, this location was not just chosen for its size, but to provide ample free parking even for vehicles towing boats and trailers. Once inside, you will be impressed by the interior layout of the store, the natural theme has come about as a result of using over 6000 lineal metres of macrocarpa, all the shop displays are custom made, and just for good measure you'll find a helicopter hanging from the ceiling!

There has never been anything like this in Ashburton before when it comes to the huge selection on offer. You'll find over 160 firearms on display featuring all the major brands. The owners are offering top end optics for the first time in Ashburton also. "With the high number of keen Tahr hunters in the region, we thought top end optics from companies such as Zeiss, Swarovski, Leica, Leupold and Steiner was long overdue!" The store has the room to do justice to warm winter outdoors clothing, DrizaBone merino and Beretta casual wear is also available for the discerning shopper.

Popular Timaru retailers Thai and Rita Ong joined the Hunting & Fishing New Zealand group in December 2008.

Thai's interest in fishing goes back to when he was a young boy in Penang. Thai's hunting interest was kindled after emigrating to NZ over 30 years ago. He was farming cattle in the Geraldine area and his farming connections gave him access to great tahr and deer country. It was at this time too that Thai caught his biggest salmon to date, a two year old tagged jack fish that weighed in at 32lb gutted. What's even more incredible is that when he hooked it that day at the Waimakariri River mouth, Thai was actually fishing for sea run trout using 10lb line and Veltic spinner!
