Fly and Gun Hunting & Fishing New Zealand is located at the very centre of the North Island in the town of Taupo.
The central North Island is a Mecca for trout fishermen and deer stalkers. Consequently our sales strengths are in fresh water tackle, firearms and hunting apparel. In store we carry an extensive range of fly rods including brands such as Sage, Kilwell and CD Rods. Our fly selection is comprehensive and our in store fly fishing guides can provide you with current fishing conditions, best fly selections and directions to the best fishing locations. We also do well representing major brands such as Penn and Shimano along with a range of salt water terminal tackle.
Taupo is surrounded by several forest parks including the Kaimanawa, Kaweka, Pureora and Whirinaki which makes us a stop off point for hunters. The Kaimanawa and Kaweka forests are home of the Sika deer in New Zealand and offer some of the best hunting anywhere is the world. Red deer can be found in good numbers in the Pureora and Whirinaki Forest Parks as well as wild pigs. In store we carry a very comprehensive range of centrefire ammo including Winchester, Federal, PMC, Norma, Remington and Hornady. We also issue hunting permits for the Kaimanawa Forest Park in store.
Come in and check out our range of hunting and casual clothing. Brands include Swazi, Stoney Creek, Huntech and of course our own range of Hunting and Fishing fleece clothing. At Fly and Gun Hunting & Fishing New Zealand our staff can 'walk the walk and talk the talk'. We are out there doing it type of people and can offer good, reliable advice having already field tested many of the 'toys' in store.
Ken, the manager of our store is a 14yr veteran of the industry and owned & operated his own store in the Bay of Islands for 7yrs before moving to Taupo. Ken brings a wealth of saltwater & game fishing knowledge & experience to the store. Ken is also a keen hunter & fresh water fisherman, although bird hunting and guns in particular would be his current passion. This passion for firearms is a big bonus for our customers, as because of this he has developed a vast knowledge of the firearms that we sell and is the man to go to when you're interested in a rifle.
James is the youngest member of our staff. He is a very keen hunter and fisherman and can often be seen on the river, lake, and in the bush on his days off chasing a good deer, trout, bird (feathered or otherwise).. and pretty much anything else that moves. He is a veteran of fishing on the lake and has perfected the art of jigging.
He has been owner operator of Fly & Gun since 1992. He has a passion for the outdoors and is a very keen fly fisherman and deer stalker. Mike has been a registered professional flyfishing guide for the past 13 years and has also represented New Zealand in flyfishing competitions at World, Commonwealth and Oceania levels. His flyfishing trips have taken him as far away as the USA, Scandinavia and Australia. Salt water flyfishing is also a passion having hosted many trips to places such as The Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Northern Australia. Living is Sika country Mike is a keen deerstalker and regularly gets out into the back country in search of that elusive 8 point trophy stag. Ducks, geese and pheasants are on the target species list in season. The problem is that there just isn't enough time in the day for everything. Balancing play and work is always a challenge.
Geoff, although young, has been around the industry for many years now. He is a keen sporting clay shooter and bird hunter. Geoff is a veteran of many helicopter trips into the back country having fished headwater rivers such as the Rangatikei, Mohaka and Ngaruroro in the Kaweka Forest Park and several of the Urewera rivers on many occaisions. Geoff is also an enthusiastic deer stalker keen on shooting a good stag during the roar.
Gary Lyttle is a keen upland game hunter and clay shooter and has been flyfishing since childhood, nurtured on the English reservoirs and rivers, he has been involved in the fly fishing industry for 15 years. He has written many articles for the British Fly fishing publications and is a keen photographer.
