Cameron Donald

By Norman Donald | 21 August 2008

Cameron Donald is a year 12 Christchurch Boys High School pupil and Adams Houseboarder. He was lucky enough to have just experienced a weekend of superb hunting at Makapua Station near Wairoa in the North Island. Here he was a guest of Colin & Marg Baynes who own and run this large sheep, cattle, and deer farming property that borders many kilometres of native bush and is also very close to the Urewera National Park and Lake Waikaremoana.

For many years Colin has been conserving the wild deer population with only very selective hunting allowed, and for those that are lucky enough to experience this, they will see hunting at its best! The opportunities that are presented come in the form of either bush hunting under magnificent stands of native bush mostly made up of Kanuka and Totara trees or on occasions deer are to be found grazing out on the bush edge of the farm.

Colin and his wife Marg run the hunting operation as an add on to the farming activities and for anyone wishing to book a hunt, they are the perfect hosts at their homestead. Furthermore the hunting skills and techniques that Colin patiently shares with any young hunter wanting to improve their knowledge are as good as it gets.

The pic on the right shows Cameron (16yo) with his 10 point stag shot on the evening of Sunday 6th April, after having stalked this animal for some time. During the weekend Cameron had the opportunity of "roaring" up a number of wild stags at Makapua, before taking this fine trophy. He also bagged a 9 point stag on the same morning, and this was his first red deer ever.

This weekend's hunt will remain with him for the rest of his days and is highly recommended for any father and son wanting the absolute ultimate experience!
