Anywhere, Anytime, Any Activity

Hunting and Fishing recommends you clean your gear every time you go into fresh water. By following the Check, Clean, Dry procedure you will ensure didymo and aquatic pests don't infest new water ways.
Those of us that chase trout, raft, hunt, or just get out and enjoy our unique wilderness have the most to lose if didymo spreads. Let's pass on to the next generation the wilderness experience we have enjoyed.
Check- before you leave a river or lake, check items and leave debris at site. If you find any later, treat and put in the rubbish, not down the drain.
Clean- Soak items in 5 percent dishwashing detergent for as long as it takes for the solution to thoroughly saturate the item, plus for at least an additional minute.
Dry- Items must be completely dry for at least 48hrs before use in another waterway.
Protect our Waterways
Hunting and Fishing are recommending that freshwater users get like the salties and clean your gear after being in the water. This simple action will stop didymo and other aquatic pests spreading. It's as easy as using a squirter bottle of diluted detergent for your hard gear and freezing your felt soles.
Didymo spreads by people not cleaning their gear. Let's adopt Check, Clean, Dry to preserve our wilderness sports fishing for future generations.
Fish without the snot - don't take it with you
If you're catching more than fish when you head to the river or lake, there is every chance that didymo or other aquatic pests will spread to other waterways you visit.
Didymo, weeds and nuisance fish are impacting negatively on our world class fisheries. We all know of the effect didymo is having on the South Islands pristine rivers and the risk it poses to other rivers throughout New Zealand.
It is our responsibility as users and lovers of our unique wilderness to do all we can to stop the spread of didymo and other aquatic pests. Clean your gear every time you go in freshwater, anywhere, anytime, any activity. And its easy. Following the Check, Clean, Dry procedure will ensure didymo and aquatic pests don't travel with you.
Didymo - its up to all of us
Those of us that chase trout, raft or just enjoy being around our waterways have the most to lose from didymo spreading. Please don't let didymo in. Either dedicate equipment to a particular waterway, or decontaminate by adopting Check, Clean, Dry, and if you choose to use felt soled waders Freeze between waterways. Didymo is easy to spread around but its also easy to contain. By following the Check, Clean, Dry procedure you will ensure that you're not responsible for spreading didymo.
Didymo - The consequences are terrible
Hunting and Fishing would like to encourage all users of our great outdoors to adopt the Check, Clean, Dry procedure when moving between waterways. By cleaning your gear when leaving freshwater you will ensure that didymo and other aquatic pests are not transferred to clean areas. Didymo can spread by a single cell, invisible to the naked eye, and its not good enough to just apply a token wipe to your gear. Cleaning using the correct techniques and possibly freezing some gear such as felt soled shoes will prevent didymo and other pests from spreading. New Zealand is at the forefront of tackling the didymo incursion and any information released is the most up-to-date information available world-wide but is also subject to change as new information comes to light.
