V-Max 22 Magnum from Hornady

By Cameron Moore | 25 November 2008

Cameron Moore, (owner of Hunting & Fishing New Zealand, Christchurch) is better known for his exploits on pigs and deer. However the proliferation of rabbits and hares in the Canterbury back country at this time of year gives Cameron the opportunity for a bit of pest control payback to the farmers that give him access for big game hunting. Cameron was quick to pick up on the advantages Hornady's V-MAX .22 Magnum ammo will have for owners - or would be owners of this the most powerful rimfire calibre.

Following on from the overwhelming success of the 17HMR (Hornady Magnum Rimfire) the small game hunting enthusiasts at Hornady have released a new 22 Magnum V-Max bullet in a hot factory load which is proving to add a new dimension to this popular calibre.

The new Hornady 22WMR ammunition delivers the pinnacle of rimfire performance. It has a 30gr V-MAX projectile that leaves the muzzle at an unbelievable 2200 feet per second, and delivers excellent terminal performance out to 125 yards. Before the introduction of this new 22WMR from Hornady, shooters were limited to ammunition that had a maximum velocity of around 1900 fps.

The next advantage that the new Hornady 22WMR has over its competition is accuracy. With its higher bullet coefficient, the VMAX projectile maintains a velocity edge downrange as less speed and bullet drop are lost due to aerodynamic drag. The bullet design helps with grouping through stability and consistency in the air. On breezy days the .22 Magnum has an added accuracy advantage over the 17HMR as the effects of side wind 'drift' are much less.

Power! The 22 Magnum is a much more powerful cartridge than the standard 22 LR. At 100 yards the 22 magnum is still carrying 156 foot pounds of energy, and that's more than the 22LR has at the muzzle!

The 22 Magnum is ideally suited for New Zealand varmint hunting conditions. The extra distance and knockdown over the 22LR and the relatively cheaper ammo price compared to small centrefire calibres all help with the popularity of this calibre. The new Hornady 22WMR V-Max will appeal to varminters, particularly rabbit and hare hunters looking for a harder hitting rimfire round with better ballistics and accuracy.

This addition to the Hornady rimfire range represents the kind of quality the world has come to expect from Hornady.

This ammo is excellent, I was out nailing some hares the other day and ended up coming home with a 100lb boar. Only took one shot from the Hornady .22mag WMR to drop him. Love the ammo but wish it was easyer to get hold of in rural areas without having to rely on postage. Could somebody like PGG Wrightson be able to get this ammo in stock ?
