BSA Sportsman HV Precharged Air Rifle

By Trevor Hynds | 25 November 2008

Trevor Hynds Evaluates another new option for Air Rifle enthusiasts this summer. Hunting & Fishing New Zealand are proud to be appointed the sole NZ outlet for the BSA Sportsman High Velocity .22cal Pre-charged Air rifle.

  • This rifle is equipped with a 10 round spring assisted quality magazine, has a simple loading and cocking mechanism, and is superbly accurate.
  • Pre-charged Air Rifles suit the enthusiast who is prepared to invest in a dive bottle from which compressed air can be transferred into the air tank on the rifle. This system reduces recoil, and maintains consistent high velocities making it the perfect pest control rifle for the small block holder who either does not have a firearms licence, or who needs serious pest control in a location that is semi built up or where it is not safe for the use of a .22 rimfire rifle.
  • There is no recoil vibration sensation as with the spring powered air rifles which gives the BSA Pre-charge. Accuracy is simply amazing - I was able to consistently put pellets through one small hole at 25 yards and better.
  • BSA's are still designed and made in England so this rifle offers the same top quality associated with the old BSA rifles a lot of us started off with when we where budding young shooters.
  • This rifle comes fitted with, wooden stock, high grade blued barrel and action, BSA 3-9 x40 AO scope with quick focus eye bell, silencer, dive bottle adaptor and a tin of the very accurate BSA Wolverine pellets.
  • Velocity will run from 1000 to 1100 FPS (.177 cal) making your Sportsman HV Pre-charged a great tool for humanly dispatching the unwanted rabbit and opossum pests that a lot of hobby farms and small land owners have trouble with.
  • These rifles combined with a good safe shooter will cleanly dispatch rabbits with headshots out to 50 yards and better.

BSA are so certain that the HV is perfect for longer range air-gun hunting in New Zealand, that they have offered a special introductory offer. In their experience 'word of mouth' is a great way to get a new model established, so they have made 40 BSA Sportsman HV's available at special price of just $1199-00 - RRP is $1499-00! This is an exclusive air-rifle, only available through Hunting & Fishing New Zealand stores. As most stores have only one available at the special price act quickly to avoid disappointment.

Pricing quoted in these Articles are correct at time of publication, but are subject to change. Please contact you local Hunting & Fishing New Zealand store for current pricing.

I have had this rifle now for 7 months. At most I can say I am impressed. The power of the rifle is outstanding and have taken possums out at 50 meters.

The hardest thing I had to overcome is that shot counts can run out quick, but then I was use to a springer. The claim is 30 shots, and I must say this is accurate, power drops off at around 25-30 shots depending on charge, but after 30 shots I recommend to recharge rifle, one shot kills are possible but in the nature of being humane I don't recommend it.

As for accuracy I cannot fault this rifle as any misses are due to human issues, resting I can drive in nails with it.

The only main issue I have with this rifle, and I hope BSA will amend this, is the fill probe is hard fixed onto the A-clamp, I have already broken one probe due to taking the rifle to the probe not the other way around. Since breaking the probe I have invested in some hydraulic hose so I can take the probe to the rifle, thus having no weight on the probe.

Something else that was hard to adjust to was the cocking mechanism, having to load the next pellet and then cocking it. This is something I have overcome by while hunting having a pellet in the breach and cocking the rifle when ready to fire as it can be de-cocked easily, once again BSA safety is brilliant.

As a rating out of 10 I would have to rate it at a 8.5. But in saying that I fired a few shots out of my springers the other day and have to admit I have been spoiled with the PCP, nice to fire, no recoil and very accurate.

Waiting for my one to arrive. Will be proud to put up a review of this rifle after I have run it through its paces, will be using it mainly for possum and rabbit/hare control on farms in my area. If this rifle can last as long as my Supersport, 18+ years with no problem, then I will be truly happy.

Look forward to posting my review in the not too distant future.

I like the quality of finish of this Air Rifle as you can expect from BSA.
