Taupo Fishing Report - 18th January 2012
A period of settled weather this past week has encouraged quite a few more people to get out on the Lake. Fishing has continued to be very good with the early morning period still being the most productive time to fish.
Harling over the first couple of hours of daylight has provided some very good sport. Best flies have been Green Orbit Red Body, Grey Ghost, Jack Spratt and the Yellow lady. As the day progresses anglers enjoying the most success have been trolling as deep as 45m or jigging. Best trolling lure colours have been Yellow and White, Hot Pink, Spotty Gold and the Black Toby. Best jigging flies are Ginger Mick, Jack Spratt and the Grey Ghost. Areas to have fished well have been Rotongaio Pt, White Cliffs, Horomatangi Reef and the Whakaipo reef.
Flyfishers have still had a frustrating time of things with rivers still very much recovering from flooding of a week ago. Backcountry rivers such as the Waipunga and Mohaka were still pretty much unfishable at the time of writing this report. Locally the best fishing has still been had from the Tongariro with good numbers of Brown trout to be found in the lower river. A good evening rise to caddis is occurring on warmer evenings on that river as well. Reports of reasonable fishing have been coming from the river mouths around the Lake but action hasn't been consistently good. The moon is well on its way down again and the night fishing is likely to improve for the next week or two.
