Taupo Fishing Report - 1st February 2012

1 February 2012, Mike Stent - Taupo H&F NZ
Fishing out on the Great Lake has continued to be very good this past week. Apart from the strong winds on Sunday the weather has been reasonably settled and fishermen have been able to travel far and wide. The early morning period still offers some very good harling. Areas such as the White Cliffs, 5 Mile Bay and Booths Farm have all harled well. Best harling flies are Grey Ghost, Jack Spratt and Ginger Mick. During the day jigging has been producing some very good fish. Whakamaoenga Point, Rotongaio and Jeruselum Bay have started to fish well again now that fishing pressure has reduced. The Western side of the Lake has also fished well jigging and downrigging to a depth of about 50 meters. Best trolling lures have been yellow and white, spotty gold, traffic light and the hot orange.

Fly fishers have had some fairly good sport this week with the river mouths starting to fish well. Good reports again have come from the western side of the Lake with some good smelting evident. The Tongariro River has been the best of the rivers locally with good numbers of Browns spread throughout the lower river. A few Brown Trout have made their way into the Waitahunui River but have not been easy to catch. Lake Otamangakau has fished Ok of late but there has been a lot of pressure on that fishery. Rivers out of the Taupo district such as the Mohaka and Wanganui River have continued to drop in level and are beginning to fish well. Cicadas are now being heard more regularly and fish are looking up for them so expect fishing to improve on those rivers. The Waipunga River has still not recovered from last years severe flooding and is not holding many fish.
