The promotion and how to enter:
(Hunting & Fishing New Zealand) – 111-117 Kaimanawa Street, Palmerston North, NZ. The Promotion (Hunting & Fishing New Zealand Swamp Comp 2024) collection runs from 9.00am on 1st November 2024 to 5.00pm until 30th November 2024 (Collection Promotion Period). Only trap stoats, weasels or ferrets and remove their trails and store in your freezer anytime of the year. Take your frozen trails and complete your entry during the Collection Promotion Period at any Hunting & Fishing New Zealand store, each tail will give you one right to enter the draw to win from the Prize Pool item(s). Rotting or decomposed tails will not be accepted.When you submit your entry at Hunting & Fishing New Zealand store during the Collection Promotion Period, we will ask you to provide some personal information. Please see our Privacy Policy as to what this information is required for, how we will use it and what your rights are with respect to that information and our collection of it. We will only issue entries during the Collection Promotion Period and you will only be able to register your entry up until 5.00pm on 30th November 2024, any late entries will not be submitted. You must be a New Zealand resident living in New Zealand. The Draw:
During the month of January 2025, for the Promotion Period of the 2024 Hunting & Fishing New Zealand Swamp Comp Promotion, Winner(s) will be randomly selected by a computer-generated random selection programme. If you are a person selected, Hunting & Fishing New Zealand may contact you directly. This random selection and announcement will happen no later than the 31st of December 2024. By the 31st of December 2024 the Winner(s) will be announced, through Hunting & Fishing New Zealand website, social media channels and via EDM database. The Winner(s) decided will be final.If Hunting & Fishing New Zealand cannot contact Winner(s) with all reasonable attempts – via phone & email have been attempted, Hunting & Fishing New Zealand will re-draw that person’s place in the Promotion.
Competition is not open to commercial or professional trappers. Entrants are asked to respect that this initiative is aimed at wetland habitat. In the spirit of the event, please do not enter tails gathered from unrelated forest control programs in areas where wetland birds do not exist.

For a bit of history, the Swamp Comp idea was born after a Fish & Game New Zealand research project published how vulnerable hen mallards, their eggs and their young were during nesting and brood rearing. In NZ we have around 40,000+ gamebird hunters. We figured if they understood the gravity of the problem, the hunting gene they possessed could be broadened to include targeting predators, especially at times of the year ground nesting birds are so vulnerable. Hunters have always been doers, not talkers when it comes to conservation, so we believed there could be a veritable army of volunteers with the smarts, enthusiasm, and motivation to out-wit even the most cunning stoat, ferret or weasel.
We say every predator removed is a reward in itself, but we knew the event would have a higher profile if it also offered prizes. We reached out to the hunting supply industry, their amazing response has been rock solid support ever since.
Ten years on with Swamp Comp and an official tally of over 22,000 stoat, ferret and weasel kills is all thanks to all the hunters who have particpated! If you haven’t participated as yet then make this the year. Just get out trapping stoats, ferrets or weasels, remove and freeze the tails when you catch them, then simply bring the tails into a Hunting & Fishing NZ store in November for counting.
